Permitted!

I finally got my Concealed Carry Permit in the mail just now. It took longer than it should have because the State Police got about three times the usual number of CCW apps in the month of May!

Fun Day Sunday

Today my friend and I completed our NRA Basic Pistol course (as a prerequisite to applying for our concealed carry permits). Another friend of mine taught the course, so afterward we hung out and sent lots and lots of lead downrange. I did my shooting for the course with my Ruger LCP, and I really like this little gun. It did bite me once, but it was my own stupid fault - I'm new to this and inadvertently had my left thumb behind the slide. Deep gash. I didn't make THAT mistake again. My buddy used his new Glock 27, but I think that pistols a little much for me. I got to fire my instructor friend's Glock 26 (9mm), and that was more to my liking. That will probably be my next pistol purchase.

I also got to play with my new AR-15 and Smith & Wesson 442. I liked the S&W revolver, but I'm wondering if the AR was the right decision for me. I'm considering trying to sell it, or maybe trade it in for another shotgun or rifle. I'll write more about it later. I also dusted off the Mossberg 590 and completely blew some stuff away with it. All in all, a VERY fun day.

Another New Gun

I'm really excited about this little pistol. They're very popular and really hard to find. I just got mine Monday, and will shoot it for the first time tomorrow. It's the Ruger LCP .380.

I bought an extra magazine and some extensions (so my pinky has purchase)

Here's a pic with the magazine extension inserted

This will be a great concealed carry gun

I also got a pocket holster

New Gun

I recently bought a new gun (a few, actually, but more on that later). I had a problem: My wife and daughter found a water moccasin 3 or 4 feet long in our backyard. Now, where we used to live, my 12 gauge would have made quick work of it, but now that we live in a subdivision, I can't shoot the shotgun.

My local gun store proprietor recommended a .22 Henry lever action rifle. He said with certain ammo, shooting it would be quieter than a pellet gun. He said it would deal with my snake problem nicely, and the neighbors would be none the wiser. It's not what I was in the market for as far as a self-defense weapon, but after shooting it for a while, I really fell in love with this gun. It's a... "charming" little rifle, and pretty fun to shoot. Takes me back to my BB gun days as a kid.

I'm a Member

I just signed up for a three-year membership to the NRA. My wife said I'm getting more redneck every day. The parish I live in ("county" for you non-Louisianians) is known, even among our neighbors for being a redneck territory (despite having one of the best education systems in the state...I realize that's not saying much). We're one of the most Republican parishes in the state (McCain got 85% of the vote in our parish during the last election). I say all that to say this: mine will not be the first car on the block adorned with an NRA sticker.

The more I learn about threats to our Second Amendment rights, the more concerned I get (as if I wasn't concerned enough already). Hopefully my new friends at the NRA can do some good in these questionable times.

Getting Prepared

My friend bought a Glock 27 last week. He and I are about to take the pre-req course for our concealed carry permits. I haven't ever been much of a pistol guy, so I'll be happy if I don't end up looking like this lady:

Mossberg 590

Here's a pic of my one and only firearm right now. A Mossberg 590 12-guage. It's a hoot to shoot. I bought this for a song from a police officer buddy of mine. Right after Hurricane Katrina, we had lots of strangers wandering our neighborhood. I told my LEO friend I wanted the "Loudest-cocking" shotgun I could find. That afternoon, he sold me this one, and it really delivers. He said the sound of the pump action on this thing has stopped more fights than anything in his line of work. Click here for a video of one in action.
